The tunnel, being constructed under the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project at Samardung in Namchi district, collapsed on July 20 following a landslide, resulting in the deaths of eight workers. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang had earlier confirmed the fatalities on Tuesday.
Expressing grief over the loss of lives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was deeply anguished by the collapse of the under-construction tunnel in Namchi, Sikkim. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
The Prime Minister announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased worker. He also announced financial assistance of Rs 50,000 for each person injured in the incident.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said that Prime Minister Modi spoke with him to enquire about the situation and the progress of the ongoing rescue operations following the tragic incident at the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project tunnel at Samardung.
Tamang said the Prime Minister's concern and compassion for the affected workers and their families, along with his assurance of all possible assistance from the Government of India, provided strength and reassurance to the people of Sikkim during the difficult period.
The rescue and relief operations are being carried out through coordinated efforts by the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, district administration, local police, medical teams from Rangpo Primary Health Centre, and the local community. These teams are working continuously to support rescue efforts and provide necessary assistance to those affected.
On behalf of the people of Sikkim, Chief Minister Tamang expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for his support, concern, and solidarity with the state during the period of grief. He said Sikkim deeply values the Prime Minister's continued guidance and the Government of India's commitment to providing all possible assistance to the state.
The tunnel collapse has highlighted the severe risks faced by workers engaged in major infrastructure projects in difficult terrains. Authorities continue to focus on rescue efforts, support for affected families, and coordinated action following one of the most tragic construction-related incidents in Sikkim.
